Course overview

The RYA Competent Crew is the starting point for your sailing. The course will introduce you to all key aspects of sailing a yacht. At the end of the week you will have become a competent and confident member of the crew. The course is designed to provide fun and enjoyment in a safe and reassuring environment.

Included: 6 days tuition onboard a modern yacht, RYA Competent Crew Handbook. Linens, Marina fees at home port, RYA Competent Crew certificate

Not included: Food (also for the Instructor), marina/anchorage fees, Diesel. Tourist tax (approx 10 Euro p/p), Travel to/from Primosten


Course content

During the RYA Competent Crew course you will be taught all the fundamentals of crewing a yacht. Knots, nautical terms, sail handling and helming just to start with. You will also learn how to fix a position on a chart and how to take an active part in all manoeuvres. This includes mooring, anchoring, navigating etc. During the course you will spend the week aboard the yacht, visiting many beautiful bays and harbours in Croatia.

 

With a maximum of 5 students per yacht, your instructors can devote plenty of time to your needs and focus the program on the areas you need most. Safety is paramount in all RYA courses. You will learn how to operate flares, lifejackets, safety harnesses, liferafts. You will assist the manoeuvres to recover a man overboard and participate in at least four hours of night time sailing.

 

At the end of the course you will be awarded the RYA Competent Crew Certificate!

Syllabus

1. Sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails  

- understand orders given concerning the sailing and day to day running of the boat.  

2. Sail Handling  

- Bending on, setting, reefing and handling of sails 

- Use of sheets and halyards and their associated winches  

3. Ropework  

- Handling ropes, including coiling, stowing, securing to cleats and single and double bollards  

- Handling warps, using sheets and halyards and their associated winches 

- Ability to tie the following knots and to know their correct use: figure-of-eight, clove hitch, rolling hitch, bowline, round turn and two half hitches, single and double sheet bend, reef knot  

4. Safety on Board 

- Awareness of the hazards of fire and the precautions necessary to prevent fire  

- Knowledge of the action to be taken in the event of fire  

5. Personal safety equipment 

- Understands and complies with rules for the wearing of safety harnesses, lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids  

6. Man overboard  

- Understands the action to be taken to recover a man overboard  

- How cold water shock can affect a casualty in the water 

7. Emergency equipment  

- Can operate distress flares and knows when they should be used 

- Understands how to launch and board a liferaft  

8. Manners and customs  

- Understands accepted practice with regard to: use of burgees and ensigns, prevention of unnecessary noise or disturbance in harbour including courtesies to other craft berthed and is aware of the responsibility of yacht skippers to protect the environment  

9. Rules of the road  

- Is able to keep and efficient lookout at sea  

10. Dinghies  

- Understands and complies with the loading rules 

- Is able to handle a dinghy under oars and knows the use and importance of a kill cord 

11. Meteorology  

- Awareness of forecasting services and knowledge of the Beaufort scale  

12. Seasickness  

- Working efficiency is unaffected/partially affected/severely affected by seasickness  

- Understand how to reduce the effects of seasickness (steer, look at the horizon, take antiseasickness tablets, etc) 

13. Helmsmanship and sailing 

- Understands the basic principles of sailing 

- Can steer and trim sails on all points of sail 

- Can steer a compass course, under sail and power  

14. General duties  

- Has carried out general duties satisfactorily on deck and below decks in connection with the daily routine
