Course overview
The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is designed to teach you to safely and confidently take on longer passages during day AND night. It is a step up from Day Skipper as you need now to deepen and strengthen your passage planning skills.

Course content
The course puts increased focus on the planning and execution of longer passages further away from shore. Passage planning, navigation, pilotage, weather forecasting, victualling are some of the key focus topics. But also engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, reefing under way and watch keeping. We will likely pick a location that is 30-40 miles away and plan a passage to arrive there by night, including pilotage out and into your destination. It is that 'leaving land behind' feeling that after taking this course, you will be then confident to tackle on your own.
Your experienced and patient instructor will teach you these skills and you will put them into practice as you skipper the yacht on longer passages among the Croatian Islands. During the course you will also refresh mooring and anchoring under various conditions.
You will live aboard for the duration of the course and visit many different harbours and anchorages where you will spend the night.
You will also complete at least 4 night hours sailing. This is to practice night pilotage and get used to identify lights and buoys at night and navigate without the use of electronic navigational aids.
With a maximum of 5 students per yacht, your instructors can devote plenty of time to your needs and focus the program to the areas you need most. At the end of the RYA Coastal Skipper course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on longer passages by day and night.
Students who successfully complete the Coastal Skipper course are awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificate and can charter a yacht pretty much everywhere in the world.

Syllabus
1. Passage Planning
- Knows the effects of fouling on boat speed and fuel consumption
- Understands fuel consumption at different speeds and can calculate fuel required for a passage, including reserve
- Understands Customs procedures and boat stability
- Can plan a coastal passage considering the yacht capabilities, navigation, victualling, weather. But also ports of refuge, tidal heights and tidal streams, publications required and strategy.
2. Preparation for sea
- Understands safety equipment required for offshore passages
- Can prepare a yacht for sea including stowage, safety briefing, watch keeping,
- Can delegate responsibilities and perform equipment and engine checks
3. Pilotage
- Can prepare a pilotage plan, with consideration of surroundings, transits, clearing bearings, buoyage, port or harbour regulations and tidal considerations.
- Can pilot a yacht by day and night
4. Passage making and ability as skipper
- Understands the practical uses of integrated electronics aids to navigation, including AIS, radar, electronic navigation charts (ENC) and raster navigational charts (RNC)
- Can take charge of a yacht and direct the crew
- Can organise the navigation, deckwork, and domestic duties of a yacht on passage
- Is aware of the significance of meteorological trends
- Is aware of crew welfare on passage
- Can use electronic navigational equipment for planning and undertaking a passage, including the use of waypoints and routes
5. Yacht handling under power
- Understands and takes into account wind and current conditions when planning and executing manoeuvres
- Can control the yacht effectively in a confined space under power
- Is able to berth and unberth in various conditions of wind and tide
– can pick up a mooring bow- or stern to
6. Yacht handling under sail
- Is able to take into account wind and current conditions during the planning and executing of manoeuvres
- Can use the sails to control the yacht in a confined space
- Can anchor and moor in various conditions of wind and tide
- Can sail efficiently on all points of sail, including downwind techniques
7. Adverse weather conditions
- Understands how to handle a cruising vessel in strong winds
- General conduct in restricted visibility
- Can prepare a cruising vessel for heavy weather
- Can navigate in restricted visibility
8. Emergency situations
- Understands the actions to be taken when abandoning to a life raft, and during helicopter and lifeboat rescue
- Understands how to carry out the aftercare requirements on a casualty who has been in the water
- Can recover a man overboard under power and sail
- Can describe to crew members the effects of cold water shock on a casualty who has been in the water
